Race Rules

Race Rules for the SunSmart Busselton Jetty Swim 2021

This information is subject to change and will continue to be updated - (last updated 25 September 2020)

  1. Only competent swimmers who are fit and adequately trained should enter.
  2. An official online entry must be completed by each swimmer or team. Completion of the online entry form and payment of the entry fee represents acceptance of these Race Rules and Conditions of Entry and the Swimmer Information and Waiver.
  3. Swimmers should ensure that they have a confirmed entry. If you do not receive a confirmation email and your entry does not appear on the confirmed entrants list (published on the Busselton Jetty Swim website) then please contact the race organisers as soon as possible via email to This email address is being protected from spambots.   4. Confirmed entrants will be emailed an eTicket containing entry details, check-in time, race number and swimmer declaration (waiver) in the week prior to the swim.  Please bring the eTicket to and your signed declaration to your allocated pre-race check-in time.
  5. All swimmers must check-in (note check-in by proxy is not permitted) at the Beachfront Marquee on either Saturday 13 February 2021 between 14:30 and 18:00 (preferred option) or Sunday 14 February 2021 between 06:00 and 07:00.  At check-in swimmers will: receive their swim cap, timing band, start wave and race number tattoo.
  6. Swimmers must be at least 8 years of age on race day.  Swimmers 12 years of age and under must provide proof of completing and passing stage 8 (as per Royal Life Saving) or equivalent to be eligible to swim in the event.  Parents or guardians are required to email swim stage proof to This email address is being protected from spambots.   7. The following age categories apply for males and females : under 15; 15-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79, 80-84, 85 and over. Age category is based on age on race day.
  8. Swimmers may enter for a solo swim, a relay team of 2, a relay team of 4 or the one mile swim.
  9. The solo swim is 3.6km.
  10. Relay team of 2: first leg 1.4km, beach start exiting at Allie’s Landing; second leg 2.2km, starting at Allie’s Landing, rounding the end of the jetty and finishing on the shore.
  11. Relay team of 4: first leg 1.0km, beach start exiting at Jetty Platform (east); second leg 1.0km, starting at Jetty Platform (east) exiting at the Underwater Observatory Ramp; third leg 0.6km starting at the Underwater Observatory Ramp and finishing at the Jetty Platform (west); fourth leg 1.0km, starting at the Jetty Platform (west) and finishing on the shore.
  12. The one mile swim is 1.6km.  Swimmers enter the water from the western side of the Jetty at the ramp near the Underwater Observatory and swim to shore.
  13. Relay members must physically tag their teammate at the relay change-over point. Race marshals will be present to monitor the relay changeovers.
  14. The swim course is marked with buoys; swimmers should use these as a guide.
  15. Swimmers or support craft are not permitted to go under any part of the Jetty unless directed by Race Officials.
  16. Wetsuits and/or swimming aids are permitted but wearers will not be eligible for awards.
  17. Wetsuits and/or swimming aids must be declared on the entry form.  Swim-aids include: flippers, snorkels, wetsuits, pull buoys, speed-suits.
  18. Swim caps indicating starting wave and team category will be supplied and must be worn.
  19. Swimmers will be required to have their race number tattoo displayed on their front left thigh and left arm.
  20. All swimmers will be given a timing band to be worn on their left ankle.
  21. Solo swimmers and the last swimmer in each team will be timed as they cross the timing mats at the beach finish.  Swimmers finishing on the jetty must walk over the timing mat at the foot of the jetty to "check-out" of the swim and hand in their timing band.
  22. All swimmers will receive a finisher's award either as they exit the finish area or as they exit the Jetty.  Awards will not be posted out.
  23. Trophies are awarded as per the award list (see below).
  24. Trophies must be collected at the official awards presentation (in person or by proxy).  Trophies will not be posted out.
  25. Swimmers withdrawing from the event must present themselves at the check-in desk and confirm their withdrawal.
  26. Failure to return a timing band will result in a $25 penalty payable at the check-in desk on the day.
  27. On water safety and support is provided by Surf Life Saving and personal support paddlers are no longer permitted, however if you feel you have a special need requiring your own personal support or provisions this must be indicated as part of your online entry under 'special needs'.
  28. All vessels in the vicinity of the event, whether involved in the event or not must abide by the Navigable Waters Regulations. Authorised officers will police these regulations as part of the overall safety provisions for the event.
  29. A swimmer may be disqualified at the discretion of the race organisers for contravening the race rules or for unsporting conduct.
  30. The organisers of the swim, Busselton Allsports Inc., reserve the right to accept or reject any entry at their discretion and also to issue special invitations.
  31. Entries close at 23:59, Australia Western Standard Time (AWST), Sunday 31 January 2021 unless sold out earlier.
  32. Late entries are not accepted.
  33. If a member of a team cannot swim on the day, a replacement may be approved by the check-in desk for a team member only, not for solo entrants or whole teams. The replacement team swimmer must fill in an entry form and sign the waiver at the check-in desk.
  34. Full refunds, less a $10 administration fee ($5 for the Kid's Swim), are only available if applied for in writing or by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and must be applied for prior to Midnight AWST Sunday 31 January 2021.  No refunds will be made after 31 January 2021.
    Full refund less $5 administration fee applies for Kid's Swim withdrawals until 31 January 2021.
  35. The event organisers reserve the right to cap numbers or close entries early.
 

Kids Swim Rules

  1. The Kids Swim is a solo swim of 222m for 8 to 12-year old’s starting on the beach on the Eastern side of the Swimming Jetty and going anticlockwise out and around the jetty, finishing on the beach on the Western side.
  2. Swimmers must provide proof of completing and passing stage 8 (as per Department of Education) or equivalent to be eligible to swim in the event.  Parents or guardians are required to email swim stage proof to This email address is being protected from spambots.   3. An official online entry must be completed by each swimmer’s guardian.  Completion of the online entry form and payment of the entry fee represents acceptance of these Race Rules and Conditions of Entry and the Swimmer Declaration (waiver).
  4. Swimmers should ensure that they have a confirmed entry.  If you do not receive a confirmation email and your entry does not appear on the confirmed entrants list (published on the Busselton Jetty Swim website) then please contact the race organisers as soon as possible via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. All swimmers must be checked-in by their legal guardian at the Beachfront Marquee on either Saturday 13 February 2021 between 14:30 – 18:00 (preferred option) or Sunday 14 February 2021 between 06:00 - 07:00.  At check-in, guardians shall: provide a signed copy of the swimmer declaration, receive a swim cap, timing band, start wave and race number tattoo for the swimmer.
  7. Official Swim caps must be worn, race number must be displayed on the front left thigh and left arm and timing bands are to be worn on the left ankle
  8. Swimmers withdrawing from the event on race day must present themselves at the check-in desk and confirm their withdrawal.
  9. Failure to return a timing band will result in a $25 penalty payable at the check-in desk on the day.
  10. The organisers of the swim, Busselton Allsports Inc., reserve the right to accept or reject any entry at their discretion and also to issue special invitations.
  11. Entries close at 23:59, Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), Sunday 31 January 2021 UNLESS SOLD OUT EARLIER.
  12. Refunds: Full refunds for the Kid's Swim (less $5 administration fee) are only available if applied for in writing or by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and must be applied for prior to Midnight (AWST) Monday 31 January 2021.
    No refunds will be made after 31 January 2021.
  13. The event organisers reserve the right to cap numbers or close entries early.
